Long before Kane Grove became Head Winemaker at Driftwood Estate, he was a local kid growing up in Margaret River, attending the iconic Leeuwin Concert with his parents and marvelling at the atmosphere that surrounded it.
The music, the vineyards and the celebration of wine left a lasting impression. Looking back, it's fitting that some of Kane's earliest memories of the region would eventually shape the career he enjoys today.
Kane's first step into the wine industry came at Leeuwin Estate, where he learnt the foundations of winemaking from the ground up. Working across the winery, he developed an appreciation for every stage of the process before deciding to further his knowledge by studying winemaking formally.
One person who left a lasting impression was legendary Leeuwin Estate winemaker Bob Cartwright.
"Bob taught me the importance of attention to detail," Kane reflects.
Today, that philosophy continues to influence every vintage he crafts at Driftwood Estate.

Why Margaret River?
When asked what excites him most about making wine in Margaret River and the answer comes quickly.
"It's the potential."
Margaret River offers everything a winemaker could hope for, exceptional fruit, remarkable soils and a climate perfectly suited to producing wines of international standing.
"We have the potential to make some of the best wines in the world."
For Kane, however, exceptional wine doesn't happen by chance. It begins in the vineyard.
A Vineyard Like No Other
Every vineyard has its own personality, and Kane believes Driftwood Estate possesses something truly special.
The gravelly loam soils provide excellent drainage, while thoughtful row orientation and vineyard aspect maximise the site's natural advantages throughout the growing season.
Then there's the estate's proximity to the Indian Ocean.
"We're not too close, but we're close enough."
Those cooling maritime breezes play an important role during the warmer months, helping moderate temperatures and allowing the fruit to ripen slowly while retaining freshness, purity and natural acidity.
For Kane, it's this combination of site, soil and climate that transforms good wine into truly great wine.
